HARBOUR BRIDGE
ADVICE TO AUCKLAND. (Special to "Star.”) ' AUCKLAND, December 3. The Shoal Bay site, proposed for the North Shore terminal of the transharbour bridge, was condemned by Captain Berndtson of the Malolo, in evidence before the Bridge Commission this afternoon. He said that no less than 1500 feet was necessary to the westward of the wharves for. ships manoeuvring to their berths. A height of 150 feet should be regarded as the minimum clearance, and there should be two central spans of riot less than 700 feet each. A ship broadside on in an easterly gale could, if necessary be nursed safely through.' The Malolo had her bridge 60 feet above the water level, and the top of the funnels was 40 feet higher. “A bridge across your little harbour without making provision for larger ships than now come in would be a great mistake,” concluded the captain.
