SUNDAY BILLIARDS

MT. EDEN’S GREAT PROBLEM. (Special to “Star.") AUCKLAND, December 3. There was a lively discussion at a meeting of the Mount Eden Borough Council last evening, when the question of Sunday billiards at the Fire Station was considered. Mr W. H. Nagle thought it would be a good idea to allow the men to play billiards at the Fire Station on Sundays, as this would encourage the younger men to remain on the premises in case of emergencies. Mr R. J. Mills agreed. He was of opinion that soon there would be no young men at the station at all. Mr S. E. Chappell strongly opposed the proposal to allow billiards, and said that since its discontinuance, it had been quite a pleasure not to hear the clicking of balls on Sundays. Mr F; L. Kendell suggested that the men should be allowed to play for a certain time on Sundays. He did not wish the men to be prevented from having some amusement during the day if it could be arranged not to conflict with the feelings of neighbours. Mr A. M. Bryden, Deputy Mayor: What about church time?

Mr Kendell. That certainly would be the time when most of (he objectors would be out of the way. .

On Mr Rendell’s '/motion it was finally decided that the men should be allowed to play on Sundays between the hours of noon and 3 p.m., subject to the pleasure- of the Council.
