CARNEGIE EXPLOSION.”

TRIBUTE TO CAPTAIN AULT. WELLINGTON, December 2. Dr Kidson and Mr A. Thomson, late of the Apia Observatory, pay a tribute to Captain Ault, of the yacht Carnegie, whom they knew intimately, they having both sailed with him in the Carnegie. Dr Kidson said that Captain Ault was well acquainted with all parts of the world. He was a fine officer and an indefatigable worker, with a knack of getting the best out of those under his command. He added: “The loss of the Car-> negie was a serious -blow to science. The huge expenditure made on her and her equipment has been justified by the results. Her equipment was far in advance of anything previously attempted, and it included some quite new apparatus for the measurement of gravity. The loss of the equipment was itself a severe blow, and it was quite likely that it would be impossible to replace the Carnegie.”
