WAIKATO ACCEPTANCES. AUCKLAND, November 8. Acceptances for the first day on Saturday, November 16, of the Waikato Racing Club’s two days’ meeting are as follow: —

TRACK AND STABLE NOTES. The Coast-owned Lord Middleton and Lady Mid have put in an appearance at Riccarton im charge of S. Adamson. Royal Comrade, who showed good form at the recent meeting on the Coast has since been doing good work, and he looks certain to win again during the season. The first division of the New Zealand Trotting Cup looks the harder of the two to win. R. Lewis, who rode Phar Lap in the Melbourne Cup, had his first mount in the race away back in 1895, and since then he has been in 30 other contests in five of which he has been on the winner. Phar Lap is the sixth New Zealandffired horse to win the Victoria Derby. Martini-Henry, Nordenfeldt, Strathmore, Carnage, and Carlita were the previous winners of the Flemington classic Included in the draft of yearlings to be submitted by Mr A. F. Roberts at the next Trentham sales is a sister to Miss .Nightraid, winner of the Halswell Hack Handicap at Motukarara last Saturday. Defection of Satisfy from the Welcome Stakes robbed the race of a large degree of interest. The reason was that she got cast in her box about a week ago. Al Jolsoni one of those scratched ■from the N.Z. Cup meeting engageaments, has developed joint trouble, but it is not deemed serious.

Grand Flaneur, Malua, and Comedy King are the only horses that won the Melbourne Cup that also sired a winner of the race. Grand Flaneur won the cup in 1880, and in 1894 his 'four-year-old son Patron led the field home. Malua won the cup in 1884, and six years after his son Malvolio scored a victory. Comedy King won the race in 1910, and his three-year-old son Artilleryman scored in 1919. An exchange states that a more than useful looking colt in Baron Derby won the New Track Novice Handicap at Hutt Park, and only four years old, he is likely to be heard of again in more important events. He is by Nelson Derby, from Plain Rose, hy Harold Dillon—Black Rose, by Wildwood—Rosewood, by Blackwood

Abdallah —Broken Leg by Cedric. He is trained by his owner, Mr H. J. Woodfield, at Palmerston North, and he was driven by the Rangiora horseman, W. Barron. Iri recounting the circumstances which have placed the New Zealander Mr H. R. Telford, in the happy position of holding a lease of Phar Lap till the end of 1930, a Sydney writer remarks: “Mr F. C. Davis, who owns the New Zealand gelding, is an American, who came to Australia seven years agq and has made his home in Sydney, where he is well established in business.”

Three geldings engaged in the Trotting Cup in Gold Jacket, Padlock and Kingcraft would not have much chance in a show ring (comments an exchange), but all three are likely to be well supported in the big two miles race. The former pair were raced at Hutt Park, and both have come through a very solid preparation, especially Gold Jacket, who is in great order. Kingcraft is at present the ruling favourite, and D. Withers reports him as being in the best possible shape. Phar Lap’s time, 2.311, in the V.R.C. Derby, was the same he registered in the A.J.C. Derby, and he won both classics in an easy manner. In the former he beat the previous record, established by Valais in 1925, by a quarter of a second, and in the Randwick event he reduced Salitros’s record in 1920 by three-quarters of a second. The Australian and New Zealand record for the distance is 2.29 X, held jointly by Gothic and Kidaides, and Maihoa, Insurrection, Bonnie Winkie, Pilliewinkie and Star Stranger all share in the New Zealand record of 2.31. Ever since Carbine left the scene — something like 35 years ago—we have been expecting another equine wonder to come along and take his place. Season after season (says “Fernhill”) there have;been hopes of such a phenomenon, but Carbine has not been equalled, though he may be said to have had challengers for his title. Is Nightmarch to reach the pinnacle hitherto only accessible to the great Musket horse? It majr be safe to predict that, even Nightmarch will fall a little below the Carbine standard in the end, but there can be no question concerning his position to-day. His reputation has not been cheaply gained. Nightmarch has proved his worth, both at w.f.a. and in the handicap department .

It is reported that an Australian buyer has expressed his intention of coming over and going to 4000 gs. for Phar Lap’s yearling brother at the next January sales, at Trentham. Although some horses live up to their names —Winalot and Phar Lap (stated to be Singalese for a particular form of lightning) are examples—it matters little what the bestowal is at the christening so long as the horse can gallop, says the Sydney “Herald”. Nevertheless, some discrimination should be used by owners, if only for the convenience of the bookmakers, who, from time to time, are given “tongue-twisters,” sometimes . with' weird results. If a two-year-old included in the list of registrations just issued ever reaches prominence it is questionable how he will become known. His registered name is .Achchha. It almost looks like a misprint, and certainly the nearest approach at pronunciation. would be a hearty sneeze! At all events, the registrar has seen fit to allow the infliction of the name on the public, and there it remains.
