CROP STATISTICS
THIS SESSION’S ESTIMATES. (Per Press Association.) ‘ WELLINGTON, November 7. The Government Statistician, in the Gazette to-night, supplies a return of the areas sown in wheat, oats, barley and potatoes for the 1928-29 season, and the estimated area of these crops for the 1929-30 season. The total area harvested for the 1928-29 season, with the area not harvested in parentheses, is as follows:—Wheat 256,584 acres (1289), total 257J873; oats 267,739 acres (15,394), total 283,133; barley 19,840 acres (nil). The estimated areas for 1929-30 season are: — I North Island: Wheat 2650 acres, oats 15,500 acres, barley 1200 acres. South Island: Wheat 231,850 acres, oats 259,500 acres, barley 18,800 acres.
Totals: Wheat 234,500 acres, oats 275,000 acres, barley 20,500 acres. The areas actually planted in potatoes for 1928-29 seasons, with the estimated area for 1929-30 season in parentheses, are as follows: —North Island 4951 acres (4900); South Island 16,353 (17,700); totals for Dominion 21,304 (22,600) acres. With regard to potatoes, the total yield from the estimated area for 1929-30 (estimated at 5.49 tons per acre) should be approximately 124,000 tons, compared with 123,607 tons last season.
