REEFTON NOTES

- REEFTON, November 8. A man. employed at Lyell, named Fitzgerald, received slight injuries to the head yesterday by falling over a bank while employed at road work. Dr Wicken and Constable Hill went out and brought the injured man to Reefton Hospital. On enquiries being made to-day he is much improved. The death of Joseph Steele at Wellington yesterday removed one . who was associated with the early history of the district and was a continuous resident from his arrival in 1873 until his departure a few months ago to take up his residence with his daughter at Miramar. He arrived in Victoria in the 60’s and thence went to Otago, arriving on the West Coast in about 1866. He was for many years manager of the drapery establishment of Smith and Barkley. After leaving the services of that firm he was associated with mining and held interests in almost every mine of note in the district. He was a native of Donegal, Ireland, and was 90 years of age at the time of his death. He is survived by a widow and one daughter, several grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. His two sons predeceased him. At the 'Magistrate’s Court, before Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., two first offenders being found after hours on the premises of the Globe Hotel, were ordered to pay Court costs 10/-. ’A third offender on the premises of the Southern .Cross Hotel was convicted and fined £2 and ordered to pay costs 10/-. A resident of Boundary Road was fined 5/- with costs 10/-, for allowing a cow to wander. Percival Lewis (Mr Joyce) was charged with the theft of a Carbide Gas Generator, the property of Percy Perry and valued at £2. The property was thought to be that lost by Perry by certain marks which had been made on it by forcing it open when stuck. Evidence for accused went to show that he had had the Generator in his possession prior to the date in question, and also explained the marks on it on which the prosecution relied to identify the property. The case was dismissed.

Sydney Thomas Williams (Mr Patterson) v. The Rangiora Timber Co. and George Alexander McAlpine. Claim for possession of certain timber allegedly wrongfully removed 'or £l4/10/3, the value thereof and £5 damages. Mr Morgan appeared for defendants. Aftei’ hearing evidence and lengthy argument by. counsel, judgment was given for plaintiff for £l4/10/3, costs £B/18/-. Judgment for plaintiffs by default was entered in the following cases: — Nicholas Lawn v. S. Kerr- £l, costs 12/-; Stanley Austin v. James Sheedy costs 5/6; T. H. Broderick v. W. H. Bartlett £l, costs 8/-; J. Wills and Co. Ltd., v. J. Olds £9/15/1, costs £l/10/6.

At a sitting of the Warden’s Court before Mr Meldrum, Warden, the following suits were heard: — Consolidated Goldfields of N.Z., Ltd, v. Thomas Chisholm Cook, judgment for plaintiff for £lO, costs £l/15/6; Consolidated Goldfields of N.Z. Ltd., v. Echraim Vinsome, judgment for plaintiff for £lO, costs £l/15/6; Consolidated Goldfields of N.Z. Ltd., v. James Derbyshire, judgment for plaintiff for £lO, costs £l/15/6. Applications.—Cyril James Smith for a Coal Prospecting License over 120 acres at Capleston. Daniel McLaughlin for a Coal Lease over 20 acres in Blk XV, Reefton S.D. Ernest Albert George Provis, for a Coal Lease over 20 acres in Blk. X, Reefton S.D. Adjourned to November 22.

New Big River Gold Mining Co. Ltd., for a Certificate of Protection in respect of eight Mining Privileges at Big River for a term of six months. — Granted.Victor Ernest McColl to surrender Water Race License No. 5189 and Special Site License No. 5188. Surrender of Water Race License No. 5189 accepted, and application withdrawn in respect of the Special Site License.

REEETON, November 9.

The new Criterion Theatre was again well filled on the occasion of the Rugby Union’s social function held last evening to wind up the football season. Visitors were present from all over the district, from Ikamatua to Inangahua Junction. Mrs Magee’s Excelsior Orchestra supplied the music, the musical strength being added to by Mr Wells, a cornet player from Christchurch. Mesdames Discaciati, Reid, and Hunt were responsible for the provision and distribution of the supper, which, was served in the supper room, the dancers being catered for in parties of 50. Excellent arrangements were made for service. Mr W. Hunt was M.C.

During the supper adjournment, Mr J. B. Auld (County Chairman) presented the cups and prizes won during the past season as follows: —Ikamatua junior team, junior banner and Discaciati Cup. Waratah senior team, Stallard Cup; Cronadun senior team, McGillicuddy Cup and McMahon Knock-out Cup. Seven-a-side tournament, Cronadun senior,. Waratah junior; Jas. O’Malley, medal for footballers’ race. The Rivals Club also presented medals to the most improved player, best tackler and most consistent player. Mr J. Discaciati expressed the thanks of the Rugby Union to all who had helped the various clubs throughout the past season, both on the field and otherwise.

Dancing was engaged in until the small hours, and all present voted the gathering the most enjoyable of its kind for the year. Yesterday morning’s special train, to Christchurch was well patronised by the Reefton travelling public. Among those visiting the races and Show are Messrs E. W. Spencer, G. Osbourne, Mr and Mrs Jno. Fielding,- Messrs Jno. Banks, Miss O’Malley, of Cronadun; Mrs V. Alborn. Mr Alex. Bray, of Crushington, also left on a health trip. Mr D. Panckhurst’s condition showed very little improvement yesterday. Further information showed that he fell some thirty feet, and he sustained slight concussion as well as painful scalp wounds.
