Judgment was reserved in th© Sydney Morning Herald case, in which contempt of Court is alleged against the newspaper (in connection, with the editorial comments on th© arrested strike leaders and “basher” gangs). BILLIARDIST’S BAIL. SYDNEY, August 28. The writ of ca re issued against Willie Smith, the billiard player, at the instance of Harrison, a journalist, was set aside to-day by Mr Justice Rogers, who declared that the bail of £5050 exceeded the amount that was legally permissible.
SYDNEY HARBOUR. SYDNEY, August 28.
The N.S.W. State Government is preparing a Bill for the reconstitution of the Sydney Harbour Trust, in order to give traders and rural interests representation, with the object of coordinating the work of the port of Sydney. The scheme will provide for more economical management and for reduced port dues, which the shipping companies have long demanded.
BETTING ON DOGS SYDNEY, August 28.
The Full Court to-day held that betting at dog at Mascot and Harold Park, where eight dogs and a live hare were used in each event, is illegal. The Court had previously banned betting at the “tin hare” meetings, which had caused the clubs to revert to live hares in order to enable betting to take place. FOLLY ‘OF STRIKES. SYDNEY, August 28. Premier Bavin, addressing the members of the Millions Club who entertained him declared: We must do something to alter the reputation we have got abroad as a land of strikes and industrial turmoil. It is time that employers and employees got together and put an end to all this nonsense. If the coalminers had accepted the Government’s proposals, they might have lost £lOO,OOO in wages whereas to date they had lost | £1,300,000.
