BIGAMY ALLEGED

WOMAN’S VARIOUS “HUSBANDS.”

(Per Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, August 29.

A middle aged woman, Winnie Horracks, was charged with bigamy, having gone through a form of marriage at Auckland* on December 21, 1921, with George Etlrl, while her husband, William Arthur Meredith, was still alive.

The latter, who is now a tailor at Christchurch, gave evidence that accused was in his employ in Monmouthshire, as a tailoress. When he married her in 1912, she stated she was then a widow.

In a statement to the police, accused said her first husband died in Pretoria. She then went to Meredith, but did not consider she was married to him, because Meredith had told her he was already married. After she had finished drawing' Meredith’s war pay (on her marriage lines with him) she came to New Zealand and lived with a chef at an Auckland hotel, later meeting Earl and marrying him. Accused was committed for trial, bail being allowed.
