MAYOR TO PAY. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 27. In the case in which Mayor Archer was sued for £6/10/-, judgment was given for the plaintiff. The plaintiff, Frederick John Reynolds, a carrier, alleged that Mayor Archer’s motor car struck plaintiff’s motor van at a street intersection, causing damage which cost £6/10/to repair, and that the collision was due to the Mayor’s negligence. The Magistrate, after hearing much evidence, gave judgment for the amount claimed, with costs. £730 DAMAGES AWARDED INVERCARGILL, Aug. 26. Mr. Justice Kennedy awarded Frederick Grieber, a gardener, £730 damages against Patrick Prendevale, farm labourer, for injuries sustained, while cycling, through being struck by defendant’s m'otor-car. The Court found that defendant should have seen plaintiff from a further distance back and should have adjusted his movements accordingly. He should not have continued and endeavoured to pass another car with little of the bitumen road available. HIGHWAYS GRANT. CHRISTCHURCH, August 28. A gathering. of Canterbury local bodies and motoring organisations today carried resolutions emphatically protesting against the proposal of the Government to withhold the annual grant of £200,000 from the Public Works Fund to the Main Highways Construction Fund, and also the annual grant of £35,000 from the Consolidated Fund to the Main Highways Revenue Fund,' as being a serious breach of faith.
