SWIMMING. (Special to ‘'Star/') AUCKLAND, July 31. Auckland has lost a champion lady swimmer, for Miss, Doris Magee last week married Mr. Harold Braiden, of Sydney, and they are spending the honeymoon in Australia, where they will reside. When 13 years of age, Miss Magee won the 100 yards junior girls’ New Zealand championship, at Timaru, in 1923. ,The following season she lost her title at Wanganui, finishing second to Miss L. Coutts, of Auckland. However, she again came into prominence in 1927, by annexing the 100 yards, intermediate girls, Auckland championship, in the New Zealand record time of 68 4-ssecs. She followed up.this success by scoring in the Dominion title event in 69 l-ssecs. To Miss Magee goes the honour of being 1 the only swimmer in Australia or New Zealand to defeat Miss Ena Stockley over 100 yards. She did this when she won the Auckland championship in 1928. Indisposition prevented her from giving of her best in the Dominion championship event decided at Dunedin, and won by Miss Stockley. Miss Magee’s last appearance locally was in this season’s Auckland, championship, in which she was second to Miss Stockley.
i ATHLETICS. CHRISTCHURCH, August 1. A strong protest was entered by a meeting of delegates of the North Canterbury Centre of the Athletic Union, last evening, against the decision of i the New Zealand Union to grant the New Zealand road championship to Taranaki. The Timaru to Christchurch road race was to have been held on October 5, and donations have already been received to help to make it a success. WELLINGTON, August 1. In regard to the visit of the Canadian athletic team, Wellington has exchanged dates with Napier, the team now making an appearance in Wellington on January 25, and Napier on January 18. The arrangement is to prevent the clashing of dates with the racing clubs and the English cricket tour fixtures. BILLIARDS f SYDNEY, July 31. McConachy 5,300 (breaks 506, 19(’, 172, 218, 254). A special meeting of the United Tennis Club was held, last evening when final arrangements were made to have the work of relaying the three courts commenced this week. The cost of the work will be met by the raising of debentures, among Club members. A motion of thanks was passed to Mr F. M. Dennehy who donated £5 ss-to the Club recently.
