LASH FOR FARMER

MORE EFFORTS TO AVERT.

(Australian Press Association.) (By Cable—Press Assn.—Copyright.)

(Recd. April 18, 10.30 a.m.) CAPE TOWN, April 17. Strenuous efforts are being made to avoid the infliction of lashes on the Jewish farmer, convicted of culpable homicide, in connection with the death of a native.

Application was made to-day to the Judge who tried the case for p, suspension, pending an appeal, on the ground that special entry was not made of the jury’s recommendation to mercy. The Judge at first refused, but subsequently suspended sentence for a fortnight, pending an application to the Appellate Division.
