BLACKBALL NOTES

C. D. Sewell, a former school teacher at Blackball, is credited with winning the Sheffield off the 12 yds. mark in 11.45 sec. at the St. Patrick’s Athletic Sports held in Christchurch. The local quoits handicap is slowly but surely drawing to a close (the first prize being 30/- and miniature silver cup presented by Messrs Young and Eckersley); second prize 20/- and third and fourth prizes 5/- each. The results of the 4th round games were: Dan McNicol (12) 21, R. Aynsley (13) 20. A. Moore (9) won by. default from A. Jamieson (9), W. McGilchrist and C. Duske (to play off). Duncan MeVicar (13) a bye. Mr. Percy Mitchell (Dobson) has consented to bring a team of Brunner Schoolboys, to participate in a game of Soccer, with the local schoolboys team on Sunday afternoon on the Blackball Domain. The net proceeds of this encounter to be donated to the funds of the local Swimming Club. The Blackball Pipe Band will also be in attendtance during the afternoon and will render a programme of variable selections.

The proposed Soccei' match on Saturday, March 23, between the Taylor-ville-Blackball teams in aid of the funds of the newly organised Brunner Brass Band will not eventuate as the ground at Taylorville is not available for that date.

The following schoolboys Soccer team has been selected to meet the Brunner “boys” at 2.30 on Sunday at Blackball: W. Parsonage, P. Bailey, F. Caldwell (capt.), J. Ashurst, A. McNaughton, W. Balderstone, T. Anderson, S. Clarke, A. Vaughan, H. Hogg, D. McVicar. Emergencies: J. Carson, W. McDougall. The Committee of the local Silver Band are making a further endeavour to reorganise their band forces. Practices have eventuated of late under the baton of Mr. Courtney Fraser.

A meeting of the Blackball Baths Committee was held on Thursday evening in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Blackball, there being present, Mesdames V. Hutchinson (sec.), Duncan, Allen and Naylor. Messrs G. Brady, L. Kinsella, J. Vaughan, R. Mountford, R. Leitch, A. McLuskie, W. Clark, H. Caldwell, J. Hunt, R. Williams, R. Duncan, Mr. G. H. Cruse presiding. A leter from the Blackball Coal Co. Engineer, Mr. J. M. Stewart) with regard to further applicants for a future water supply being granted permission to connect to present pipe-line was fully discussed. Mr. G. Brady outlined the case with regard to present consumers re the amount of wastage of water prevailing at the present time, owing chiefly to the’ball check-valve system not having been adjusted by several consumers to their water cisterns.

A resolution was put forward that the Baths Committee adhere to a former resolution that no further applicants for a water supply be connected to present pipe line; that Mr. W. Goodall, whose premises were recently connected to pipe line be cut off forthwith. An amendment, that expert advice be obtained to go into details with regard to additional .consumers being connected to pipe line so that the ball check-valve system be strictly enforced to prevent a future wastage of water was also put forward. On a show of hands being taken the amendment was carried by 12 votes to 4. It was also decided that in the event of the report of Mr. Higgins the County Engineer, being in the affirmative, that names of applicants already submitted to the Baths Committee b 4 given preference. Mr. R. Duncan being nominated to interview Mr. Higgins. A resolution that all consumers be given a fortnight’s notice to date to comply with a previous agreement to affix ball checkvalves to water cisterns, otherwise their water supply would be cut off, was carried unanimously, Messrs Roy Williams and R. Mountford were nominated to interview all present consumers on Saturday April 6, to see that the agreement with regard to ball check-valve arrangements had been carried out and report to a further meeting of the Baths Committee. It was also resolved to hold ;t swimming carnival at Blackball on Sunday, March 31, and that a proposal from the W.C. Swimming Association that the girls (under 17) Diving Championship of the West Coast alloted to the Blackball Swimming Club be entertained. Messrs R. Duncan, J, Vaughan and L. Kinsella were requested to draw up a variable programme of swimming events at an early date.

Mr. D. McGregor, accompanied by Messrs W. Jones, and J. Wright, left Blackball on Friday by car on a brief visit to the Nelson district. A roll-call meeting of the local Miners’ Union will be held on Sunday morning for the transaction of general business.

Mr. J. P. (Pard.) Brady, a wellknown local identity, is confined to the Grey Hospital undergoing treatment for an injury sustained to the foot

while following his employment at the mine. Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Snedden, accompanied by Miss M. Hogg, will leave Blackball on Tuesday on a holiday visit to Whangarei. The members of the Roa Tennis Club will meet a team selected from the Waiuta Public Tennis Club in a series of games on the Roa Club’s Court on Sunday.
