WATERSIDER’S COMPENSATION.

Thomas Owens, a watersider, was to-day awarded by the Supreme Court £174, minus any payments made under the Workers’ Compensation Act, in his claim for £266 against the Shaw, Savill and Albion Co., Ltd., for negligence in the manner of placing certain hatches on the Coptic, resulting in injury. to plaintiff. JEWELLERY THEFT. AUCKLAND, February 10. At the Supreme Court, Mr Justice Blah’ sentenced Cecil Francis John Hunt, aged 24, to three years’ hard labour for theft of jewellery from the premises of Meltzer Brothers, pawnbrokers, on June 25, and one year’s imprisonment for receiving, the sentences to be concurrent. CREDIT BY FRAUD (Special to “Star.") AUCKLAND, Feb. 11. Edward John Samuel, 50, commission agent, pleaded guilty to three charges of obtaining credit by fraud the Crown withdrawing five others. The total involved was over £2OOO. Counsel (Mr. A. H. Johnstone) said it was with considerable hesitation that he advised prisoner to plead guilty to three charges. The case reminded him of Charles Lamb’s statement that the world was divided into two parts, those who borrow and those who steal. Counsel pleaded for leniency, owing to the ill health of the prisoner who will get £2OOO under his father’s will, and promises to see that the creditors benefit thereby.

Judge Blair deferred sentence until this afternoon to consider Counsel’s request.
