ARCHBISHOP’S DEATH. MELBOURNE, January 11. The late Archbishop Harrington Lee’s body will be cremated, and the ashes will be taken to England by the widow.
RAILWAY TRUCKS SMASHED. ADELAIDE, January 12.
During shunting operations at Mount Lofty,, a guard’s van and twenty-one trucks broke away and dashed down the line at a speed of 80 miles an hour. Four and a-half miles away, the trucks were derailed, and some were smashed to pieces. The tracks was uprooted. Pigs and sheep in the trucks, valued at £llOO, were killed. None of the train crew was aboard.
TIMBER WORKERS’ DISPUTE
MELBOURNE, January 11
The timber workers’ dispute is coming to a crisis. Telegrams invitingmembers of the Executive of the Australian Council of Trades Unions, who reside in other States, to attend a Conference in Melbourne, have been despatched, and the view is expressed that if the Conference fails to negotiate a settlement with the employers, afiother big unheaval throughout Australia is bound to occur. PAPUAN REVOLT. SYDNEY, January 12. A Rabaul message states that the /Kdmioiistrator promised a Commission will inquire into the native disturbance- Disciplinary action has been taken against members of the native police who took part in the recent mutiny, and six months’ imprisonment was imposed on those who absented themselves from duty. The suspected ringleaders have been remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence, on a charge of conspiracy.
