ROSS NOTES

ROSS, October 14.

A. sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held here on Saturday, Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., presiding, and the following cases were dealt with: — Two juveniles were charged with attempting to set fire to the Church of. England on August 20. There was no damage done. Thpy were reprimanded and discharged.

G. H. Robertson, for failing to produce a motor driver’s Jicense, when requested to do so by the Traffic Inspector, Mr A. J. Sloss, was fined 20/with costs.

Twelve Matainui residents were charged with allowing pattie to wander. Each was fined 5/-, with costs. George Nisson and Frank Butler were charged with using the Public Hall at Matainui as a a common gaming house, in that they conducted euchre tournaments therein. Defendants admitted using the hall for euchre tournaments in aid of the hall funds when they charged for admission and awarded prizes. They were each fined 10/-, with costs. In the civil cases, J. J. Heveldt v. A. Mason, judgment for plaintiff for tho sum of £3 2/3. Commissioner of Taxes v. William Foster, judgment for plaintiff for £3 1/3. Mrs J. Bassett, who has been visiting Mrs G. H. Chapman, has returned to Hokitika.

A concert is to be held in Totara Hall, Ross, on Friday next, in aid of tho Presbyterian Church, when a splendid programme will be presented.

Mr and Mrs McNabb, who are leaving shortly for Wellington, were entertained to afternoon tea on the local tenuis courts, and were presented with a travelling rug and fountain pen. A Paddy’s Market in aid of the funds of the Church of England will be held hero next Saturday. The weather at present is beautifully fine, but cold, and the snow is very low on tho surrounding hills. Mr Fuohy, schools dentist, is at present on a professional visit to Ross. 'Die local Sisters of Mercy are attending the jubilee celebrations at the Convent, Hokitika.

Constable and Mrs D. Moody and family - paid a short visit to Ross. Many local residents remained at their wireless sets throughout the night listening for news of the Southern Cross and were delighted to announce the arrival of Captain Kingsford Smith and his crew.
