SOCCER FOOTBALL

RUNANGA DEFEAT BLACKBALL.

Runanga and Blackball teams met at Dobson on Saturday, in ideal weather, before a fair crowd of spec tators.

Blackball pressed continually for the first fifteen minutes of the game, Hampson and Hogg shooting over the bar from close range. Later Hewison scored for Runanga, with a high shot. Afterwards Runanga had more of the play, the interval arriving with Runanga leading by 1 goal to nil. Blackball, with the aid of the wind and sun asserted pressure for a time, but the Runanga forwards broke away Marley finishing off a movement by a neat goal. Several golden opportunities were not taken advantage of by the Blackball forwards. Later Hewison and Baddeley added further goals for Runanga, who hereabouts had the game in safe keeping, the Blackball team having fell away completely, the final score being Runanga four goals, Blackball 0. Every credit must be extended to the Runanga team on their wellearned victory, as they were undoubtedly the better team on the day’s play after the first fifteen minutes. The game on the whole was anything but a great display of soccer football. Ennor in goal for Runanga, brought off many clever saves, as did Clark for Blackball, and was in no ways to blame for the heavy defeat. Of the four backs, Sharp and Marley kicked more cleanly -than Cochrane and Caldwell. Rarity stood out in the intermediate line for Blackball, while Simpson (a player with a future) was equally in the limelight on Runanga’s behalf. Hampson was the best of a very moderate forward line, while Hewison, ■ Pickering and M. Marley shone out for Runanga. Mr W. Cowan (Dobson) officiated'as referee. After the game the players adjourned to the Cosmopolitan Hotel (Dobson) where the President of the Westland F.A., Mr T. Crankshaw, presented the Medals to the members of the Runanga team, and also called upon the representatives of the Rewanni Club to come forward and receive the Westland Cup as champions of the Westland Competition for 1928 season. The. presentation proceedings were of brief duration. At the close, ithreO cheers were given for the victorious team, who were highly delighted to turn the tables on their last season’s conquerors in the Medias’ Final.
