The spice of the programme was provided by two sketches presented by the Amateur Theatrical Club (producer, Mr P. H. Jones, author Mr C. A. Hill). Parts in “Newlyweds” were taken by Mesdames Haab and Jones, Miss Kerridge and Messrs Staples and Doig. The sketch was cleverly acted and brought forth applause as a fitting ending to the first half. “The dentist” proved a splendid “draw,” many of the lines particularly at the climax, being lost in the sustained uproar. Parts were: Mr Douglas (dentist), Mr Staples (assistant), Miss Hampton (patient), and Mr P. H. Jones (patient). The concluding item, arranged by Mr Staples, “O What a Difference the Navy made to me” was well rendered and concluded a most enjoyable programme. Parts in the last item were taken by Mr Staples (soloist), and Misses R. Woolhouse, L. Beckwith, C. Read, M. Kerridge and E. Hampton. Prior to the last item Mr McEwin thanked those who had assisted particularly Mrs Banks, Mrs Chisnall (Blackwater), Mrs Ord (official accompanist), Mr W. J. Staples and Mr J. Green (who arranged the programme). After the concert a dance was held to music supplied by Miss R. Woolhouse, assisted by Mrs Ord and Mr Staples. Mr F. Thorn had charge of the floor. A local sports meeting will be held by the Waiuta Sports Club on Labour Day. The programme comprises chopping, sawing and running, with the miners’ chop as the chief event. The club intends holding its annual meeting early next year.

Two games of League will be played this week-end, the Reefton v. Waiuta challenge for the Anisy Shield, and Rover juniors v. Waiuta juniors for the O’Donnell Challenge Cup. Trophies won during the season will be presented at a banquet at a later date.

The Blackwater Mines showed a nett profit of £771 for September. There was a moderate attendance at the annual meeting of the Waiuta Cricket Club. Mr H. Finch presided. The annual report and balance sheet were read and adopted, a balance of £24 12/3 being shown, due to the zeal of the secretary, Mr J. Fitzgerald. £8 was donated to the Domain Board towards improvements to the ground. It is expected that the club will field two teams this season. Officers were elected as follows: Patron, Mr E. W. Spencer; president, Mr R. A. Stewart; vice-presidents, Mrs O’Donnell, Messrs R. Hempseed, J. Collins, A., Anisy, C. Pratt and Dr. L. J. Wicken; secretary, Mr J. Fitzgerald; treasurer, Mr R. A. Stewart; captain, Mr J. Fitzgerald; vice-captain, Mr H. Finch; committee, Messrs H. Finch, H. Woods, J. Short, W. Staples, T. Malloy and M. Kennedy.

It is expected that the tennis and cricket will open not this week-end, but next. Showers of rain and hail have fallen every day lately with lightning and strong winds. The barometer has risen again. Rain has fallen every day for (lie past 11 days to a total of 421 points.
