DRIVEN MAD BY FIGURES

LONDON, September 19

Alfred William Mond, aged 27, a cousin of Lord Melchett, employed as a chemist on the staff of Lord Melchett’s Chemical Industries, Limited, was found hanging from a. tree on his father’s estate at Storrington.

Apparently Mond was normal when he participated in a dinner party, but his father said his son was overworked and did not want to return to the oilice. He told his father that the mass of figures he carried in his head was driving him mad. At the inquest a verdict of suicide ■was returned.

POOR MAN WINS £20,000.

LONDON, September 19

A prize of £20,000 given by the “Sunday Despatch” for forecasting correctly 24 football results was won by Tom Hartley. He is an unemployed loom sweeper, and has been frequently “on the dole” this year. Since Hartley and his wife were 11 yearS of age, except when he was on war service, they have worked side by side at the loom, at which his wife remained while Hartley came to London to receive the cheque. The largest sum he had previously possessed was £17 —his war gratuity.

PILGRIMAGE OB 1 DEATH.

PARIS, September 19

Jules Florentine, one of the few survivors of a French regiment which was practically annihilated' at Douaumont during the defence of Verdun, saved his earnings after the war to make a pilgrimage in honour of his comrades.

He rode a cycle to Douaumont. While ho was descending a hill approaching the fort, the machine skidded, and he was thrown into a ditch and broke his neck.

U.S.A. AND CHINA

WASHINGTON, September 27

The United States Government have extended complete official recognition to the Chinese Nationalist Regime at Nanking as being the Government of China, although, there will be no formal announcement to this effect, unless the Nanking Government requests it.

The State Department has announced also that Mr Mac Murray will retain the post of Minister in Pekin, and Mr Sze will continue to be the Chinese Minister here.

UNBREAKABLE GLASS

LONDQN, September 28

Professor Ealy, of Liverpool University, claims to have discovered an unbreakable glass, which is cheaper than the ordinary glass. It admits the sun’s rays, and is, at the same time, burglar proof and is unsplinterable.

To demonstrate the glass, he flung a piece on a stone floor, from which it rebounded intact. He declared that this glass had unlimited possibilities.

WHITE AUSTRALIA

VANCOUVER, Sept. 28

A message from Saint John (New Brunswick) states that Senator Sampson (Australia) at a civic dinner in honour of the Empire Parliamentary Association, referred to a statement that if the vacant spaces in the Dominions were not filled up, the world would not tolerate our holding these countries. He asked “With what people were they, to be filled? Were they to be filled with people from Asia? The white Australia policy is not a policy so far as the inhabitants of Australia are concerned, it is a religion.”

JUGO-SLAVIAN SHOOTINGS

M. Pcric, an active member of a society pledged to maintain the integrity of Yugo-slavia, was shot by an assassin who fired through the window of the victim’s flat at Faibach while he was dining with his wife. There were many arrests, says the Vienna correspondent of the “Daily Mail.” M. Pribichevich, the Democrat leader, denies allegations of his complicity. Papers found in M. Perle’s flat may implicate persons whom he had accused of espionage.
