LONDON WOOL SALES

LONDON, September 28

At the wool sale to-day, 10,481 bales were sold, of which 7,436 were Australian and 2,165 New Zealand. There was a splendid selection of merinos, principally the spinners’ style, and super wools; also an excellent selection of greasy crossbreds. There was improved competition and prices weie well maintained. The withdrawals were moderate. OIL SHARES. LONDON, September 27. A feature of the Stock Exchange at present is a great activity in oil shares, which have changed hands rapidly. Prices have advanced all round on rumours of a pending world oil agreement, which would include Russia. Anglo-Persian oil shares sold at 96/3, compared with only 62/- early in the year.

CHRISTCHURCH, September 28. Nothing so sensational as the rapid rise in potatoes has been recorded on the Christchurch produce markets lor some years. Quotations for potatoes now show an increase of 100 per cent on those ruling on September 7. lhe price offered farmers to-day is £9. and it is expected that the price will rise still higher. For prompt delivery £lO was offered to-day, and for October delivery £l2 10/. The rise is due partly to over-sellers having to cover demands for September-October, they have been finding that the potatoes they need are not in sight. Farmers w'ho have potatoes are holding firmly. A large quantity of wheat changed hands at varying prices. Good quality is worth 5/8, second grade from 5/4 to 5/5, fowl wheat 5/7 fo.b. ■ WOOL SALES. Messrs Dalgety and Company report from London, September 24: The opening dates for the London Wool Sales 1929 are: January 15, March 5, April 30, .July 9, September 17, November 19. SALE OF STORE CATTLE Farmers throughout -the district are notified that a sale of store cattle will be held at Totara Flat Saleyards on Tuesday October 2. The entry will comprise 200 head which are well grown and well bred cattle. The auctioneers, M’Mahon and Lee invite further entries.

Business on the Stock Exchange has been normal during the week with prices on the improvement tor giltedged shares. As usual the Banks and Insurance command most attention.

The Bank of New Zealand are firm with buyers at 61/3, Bank of New South Wales are also firm with buyers at £5l/5/-, Union Banks have had numerous sales at £l5/6/-. N.Z. Insurance shares keep advancing the sales this week touching 45/6. South British are standing at 32/9 buyers. Nationals have buyers at 16/4.

N.Z. Breweries show the biggest rise Last week sales were made at 53/9; this Week they have advanced to 55/6. Staples sales were made at 39/1. Colonial Sugars continue to move upward. Buyers are offering £62/12/6. Waihi shares are on the rise with sales this week at 13/5.
