GENERAL CABLEGRAMS

CHICAGO HISTORY-BOOKS

'Australian Press Assn.—United Service./ (By Cable—Press Assn—Copyright.)

NEW YORK, August 23

A Chicago message states: The Mayor of Chicago, “Big Bill’ Thompson, apparently has won his battle against British influence in America for Mr W. J. Bogan, the new Superintendent of Schools, has eliminated all of the six histories which Mayor Thompson attacked during the trial of the former Superintendent, Mr McAndrew, from school study here, on the ground that these books are proBritish. The single history which remains available to the schools is Gordy’s ‘History of the United States,’ and that is retained with a request that the picture “Resplendent Redcoats” be deleted, and replaced by a portrait of George Washington.

AMERICAN TOURISTS.

NEW YORK, August 23

The determination of the tourist agencies not to include Australia in world cruises is apparently not being relaxed. The Raymond, Whitcombe Company has just announced its 1930 plans, which indicate an itinerary of twenty-nine countries. Australia and New Zealand are not among them. LORD HALDANE’S FUNERAL.

LONDON, August 23.

Lord Haldane was borne to the family burial ground at Gleneagles private chapel on a. horse-drawn lorry. The Earl of Lucan represented the King.

FIJI METHODIST CHURCH,

SUVA, August 24.

A Methodist Mission deputation returns to Sydney this evening by the Moeraki. As the result of conferences, the Rev. Mr MacDonald (Chairman at Fiji) has withdrawn his resignation, and remains in office.

CANADIAN WHEAT CROPS

WINNIPEG, August 23

Serious damage to the wheat crops by frost last night is reported from many widely-separated points in Saskatchewan * and from a number of places in Alberta. It is impossible to tell how much damage has been done untiil the threshing, but where the crops are green and late, the loss will be serious. The principal damage is confined to Saskatchewan, which is the chief wheat province.

LABOUR DELEGATES

LONDON, August 24

The Secretary of the Trade Union Congress (Mr. Andrews) who was the Government delegate at the Geneva Labour Congress, complains that after passing the Customs at Harwich, two detectives searched his papers. Andrews, avowedly Communistic, admitted that he associated 'during his visit to Europe with leaders of the Amsterdam International. At the Labour Conference in London, a cleavage was apparent between the British and Irish Dominions’ delegations on almost every subject. A clear proletarian viewpoint was not predominant.

BANKING AFTER HOURS

RUGBY, August 19

An automatic receiving safe, which will enable traders and managers of theatres, cinemas, and restaurants, who coilduct business after the usual local banking hours to deposit money at any hour, has been installed at one suburban branch of the Midland Bank. Similar safes are being constructed at other branches. Access to the safe is gained by a small revolving door in tho outside wall of the bank, the door being controlled by a. special key provided by the bank. The customer is also furnished with a leather wallet, in which he places his cash and cheques.

The customer places the wallet on a small platform, which rotates as the door is closed, thus permitting the wallet to travel by way of a chute into the safe.
