VALEDICTORY

MR AND MRS H. L. JAMIESON.

The United Pavilion was packed last evening on the occasion of a farewell social and dance, tendered by the United Football Club to Mr and Mrs 11. L. Jamieson, who leave to-day to take up their residence in Christchurch.. People, young and old. were in a jovial mood, and with a good floor and excellent music provided by Williams’s orchestra, the programme went with a swing from beginning to end. The United Ladies’ Committee dispensed a first-class supper. During the evening solos were rendered by Alisses Doreen O’Hallahan_, Marvel Warnes, and Mr W. Kitchingham, their accompanists being Misses K. Gieseking and M. McKay, and .Preston respectively. Air A. A. Adams presided, in the absence of Air G. Kear, United Football Club’s President, and in opening proceedings said that the club had been lucky in the fine type of young fellows it possessed. None was more entitled to their best wishes than Mr “Paddy” Jamieson. fie had done great work in the different branches of the club socially, and on the playing field as well had shown wonderful sportsmanship. This, however, was a common trait in the Jamieson boys. Air Jamieson’s fine character would take him far in his profession, and he hoped that he would eventually return to take over the managership of the branch in which he started his business career.

Air Adams expressed great pleasure in asking, on behalf of the club,. Tvlr Jamieson to accept a well-filled envelope, with which he (hoped Air and Mrs Jamieson would be able to purchase some small memento, which would remind them of their happy associations with the club. With the present went the best wishes of the club to Air and Airs Jamieson.

The Mayor (Air J. W Greenslade) said he was pleased to associate himself with the club in farewelling Air and Airs Jamieson, although it was not a very pleasant duty in having to farewell such a good citizen and clean sportsman as Air Jamieson. He had known “Paddy” since childhood, and he had proved a fine man in all phases of life, socially and in a business sense, lie was the son of a family of good citizens and had himself turned out one of the best, and had proved himself valuable both on the playing field and in the welfare of the town. He was glad to see Air Jamieson’s friends do him such an honour, in giving him such a fine farewell. He had helped to make the United Club’s good name, gaud also the good name the town- possessed throughout the Dominion. He was sorry to see them going, but hoped they would soon return and renew old acquaintances. On behalf of the people of Greymouth the Alayor then wished Air and Airs Jamieson continued happiness and success.

(Mr Coulton, on behalf of the Star Club, expressed pleasure in joining in the farewell to “Paddy” and his wife and mentioned that although both the clubs lived to beat each other on the football field they did so in the best spirit. Air Jamieson was loudly applauded when he rose to reply He said that it was hard to have to say good-bye. He had been born and brought up in Greymouth, and had been connected with the United Club since the termination of his school days. It would be hard to find a finer body of sportsmen in New Zealand. He would be pleased to meet any Coasters wherever he be in the future. He regarded it as the duty of every man to do his share, socii illy and on“the playing field, for his club. He had enjoyed his football here more perhaps thon people thought, and he would always be pleased of the opportunity to play again for his old club. The Star and Ins club had always been rivals ; they

were so in the best of sporting spirits. He thanked the chib for the handsome gift, but said that the friendship of those connected with it was alone sufficient to remind him and his wife of the happy days ajjent with them. “For They are Jolly Good Fellows’’ was sung, three of the heartiest cheers following.
