KUMARA NOTES

At the Memorial Hall on Thursday evening a public send-off was accorded to Constable and Mrs Fox and family prior to their departure for Naseby, to which town Constable Fox has been transferred. The hall was packed. The first part of the programme consisted of a number of vocal and instrumental items, in which the Misses Lalor, Tomasi,. Gilbert and Murtha and Messrs .Murtha and Master Laloiytook part. These were all highly appreciated, so much so that in every instance encores were demanded. 1

The Mayor (Mr Spiers) then addressed the assemblage, stating it was a great pleasure to see such a large gathering present to bid good-bye’to Constable and Mrs Fox, who were leaving the district after a sojourn of eight years. In his official capacity Constable Fox had carried out his duties in a way that had given general satisfaction, and as a citizen would be hard to beat. He ha'd helped in every way he could for the advancement of the town, especially in connection with the Memorial Hall. Not only had he given liis time, but had, oftentimes put his hand in his pocket to help things along, and as a mark of appreciation he had much pleasure in presenting Mrs j'ox with a well-filled wallet, the gift of the people. Father Lordan, in supplementing the remarks of the Mayor, said that when he arrived in Kumara twelve months ago, he was not impressed with the look of the place, but after getting to know the people, came to the conclusion that Kumara was not a bad place aftei- all. Tn Constable and, Mrs Fox he had found staunch friends, and had f,o thank them for many kindnesses received which he would never forget. In his official capacity, Constable Fox had unpleasant duties to perform, but he, always carried them out in a way that had earned him respect He wish ed Mr and Mrs Fox Clod speed in their new sphere. Constable Fox briefly replied thanking tb_s_ Mayor and Father Lordan for the kind things said of him, also the people of the district for the present to Mrs Fox. He would look back with pleasure’to the time they had spent in Kumara.

Supper was then partaken of, after which the hall was cleared for dancing, which was kept up until 12.30 a.m.

Constable and Mrs Fox leave for Naseby on Tuesday morning. Captain Macfarlane and Lieut. Brayshaw left for New Plymouth on Thursday evening l to attend the annual Fire Brigades’ Conference.
