A NIGHT ATTACK

(To the Editor.) Sir,—For the last two nights, I have been aroused from a hard-earned sleep by noises reminiscent of an incipient bombardment. A series of loud demonstrations shook Greymouth late on Thursday night and early (about two o’clock) yesterday morning, while at 11.45 last night five distinct explosions shattered the atmosphere. It is said that the disturbance is being caused by blasting operations at the Cobden quarry. Can you inform # me why such unearthly hours are being worked there. I am confident such arrangements would not be tolerated in any other town, and the mothers of infants startled from their sleep have my sincere sympathy, to say nothing of adults. —I am, etc., MORPHEUS.

Enquiries made from Mr W. B. Gilbert, secretary of the Grey 'Harbour Board, elicited the information that a blasting tunnel is being driven at the quarry to remove a “toe.” of the hill. In order to expedite the work, three shifts are being worked. It is expected that the blast will be carried out in about three weeks.—Ed. Star.
