ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS

RESULTS AT CHRISTCHURCH. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, December 9. The New Zealand Amateur Athletic Championships opened at Lancaster Park this afternoon in glorious weather. The track was fast. The provincial teams were up to full strength, except for the defection of Williams, the young Auckland sprinter. One record was broken during the day, as F. R. Ramson (Wellington) lowered the existing record of 58sec. for the quarter mile hurdles by 1 1-5 secs. The form shown in all events was good. At present the points for the Championship Shield are: Wellington 20, Canterbury 5, Auckland 4, Otago 4, Wanganui-Taranaki 2. A moderate easterly wind blew in the faces of the competitors in the sprint events. Results: — 100 Yards: First heat: M. Leadbetter (Canterbury) 1; A. J. Elliott (Auckland) 2; J. A. Shirley (Auckland) 1; C. L. Tapley (Otago) 2. Won by a yard. Ramson, Wellington’s hope, fell at the third hurdle. Second heat: R. W. Lander (Wellington) 1; H. D. Morgan (Otago); G. Broad (Wanganui-Tara-naki) 3. Won easily by five yards. Time 16secs. The fin'al is to-mor-row. 220 Yards Championship: First heat: C. Jenkins (Wellington) 1; A. J. Elliott (Auckland) 2; A. B. Clark (Canterbury) 3. Won by a yard and a half. Time 23secs. Second heat: M. Leadbetter (Canterbury) 1; J. T. Fleming (Wellington) 2; J. L. McCoy (Auckland) 3. Leadbetter won by two yards in 23secs. The final is to-morrow. 440 Yards Hurdles: F. R. Ramson ("Wellington) 1; F. Nesdale (Auckland) 2; H. D. Morgan (Otago) 3. Ramson took the lead early from Nesdale and Lander, but half way round Lander retired. Nesdale and Ramson were together twenty yards in front of Morgan and Broad. Ramson won in the record time of 56 4-5. Throwing Discus: P. Munro (Wellington) 128 ft 5 Jin. 1; L. Hunt, Wan-ganui-Taranaki) 125 ft lOin 2; E. G. Sutherland (Wellington) 114 ft Sin. 3. McHolm (Canterbury), Harvey (Wellington) and Lang (Wanganui-Tara-naki) also competed. Three Miles Walk: W. Lankey (Wellington) 1; R. H. Cabot (Otago) 2; J. A. Wilson (Otago) 3. Lankey led all the way and won by nearly half a lap. Time 22mins 58secs. McKenzie (Canterbury), E. Wills (WanganuiTaranaki) and Delury (Canterbury) also started. Throwing the Hammer: J. W. McHolm (Canterbury) 138 ft 3in. 1; J. G. Leckie (Otago) 138 ft 2in. 2; W. Harvey (Wellington) 137 ft 91in. 3. Hunt (Wanganui-Taranaki) also competed. Broad jump: E. G. Sutherland (Wellington) 21ft. SJin. 1; J. W. Shirley (Auckland) 20ft 6?>in. 2; R. R. Cordery (Canterbury) 19ft. lOlin. 3. The other competitors were: Bradford (Canterbury), Hanan (Otago), Thomson (Otago), Joseph (Canterbury), Johnson (Otago). The Ladies’ Handicap event over 100 yards, resulted: M. Nelligan (7yds) 1; D. Unwin (41yds) 2; N. Wilson (Iyd) 3. Time 11 3-5.

CONFERENCE DECISIONS CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 10. The annual conference of delegates to the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association decided that entrance fees in all amateur events be one shilling, but fees for New Zealand Championship events will be half-a-crown. The Selection Committee for the future New Zealand teams shall consist of two selectors, one from each Island. In future, where the entries total more than ten, heats will be run in both 440 yards and 880 championship. A remit from the Canterbury Centre that the present system of Australasian championships be rescinded and that in their place a biennial contest between New Zealand and Australia be held, was carried. After considerable discussion, a motion that walking events he deleted from the programme for New Zealand championships was lost. A discussion on amateurism and professionalism occupied some time, but no motion was carried, it being left to the New Zealand Council and the various centres to take what steps are necessary.
