JEWEL POINTER’S TRAINER. (Special to “Star.") AUCKLAND, December 9. The action of the Waikato Trotting Club, in charging up to J. Shaw £l, a fine imposed upon him by the starter, Mr. J. Williamson, for being late at the post in the Mark Memorial Cup with Bold Bill, will, to put it mildly, cause some surprise. When all the facts are considered, it does seem a bit harsh. J. Shaw, as the trainer of Jewel Pointer and other horses, in order to help the Waikato Club along, agreed with the owner of Jewel Pointer to take the horse to Hamilton. With a horse engaged in a rich race like the Auckland Trotting Cup, there are not many owners or trainers who would even entertain taking Jewel Pointer away to a country fixture, in order to provide an attraction, but Mesrs Moodabe and Shaw felt that they were in a position to give the Club a lift along, and Jewel Pointer, as we all know, was presented and stepped a mile in 2.9 2-5, but at the meeting Shaw had other horses engaged, and two of them were in the Mark Memorial, which event preceded Jewel Pointer’s exhibition. Shaw drove Bold Bill in the Mark Memorial, and went out on to the other candidates, but then remembered that Jewel Pointer, whose exhibition mile (entered in the race card to take place after the second race) would take place later, he drove Bold Bill back to the birdcage in order to give instructions to have Jewel Pointer harnessed up, and by the time he returned to the track the horses were ready to line up for the Mark Memorial. The starter, Mr. Williamson, fined Shaw £1 for being late, and on the open cheque which Shaw lodged with the Club, this was charged up. Considering the whole of the circumstances, the action of charging the fine against Shaw seems to be a harsh one.

By “Register.” GALLOPING.

There was plenty of activity on the Omoto course this morning, several owners and onlookers being present. The course proper was open for work.

Flying Master was early on the job, and galloped once round. Gaslight and Beaming clipped over half a mile in 52sec., finishing on terms.

Erin Go Bragh and King Cheops followed by covering the same journey in 51 1-5 sec., the latter passing the post half a length to the good. Both horses were afterwards worked on the sand. Ramases (Lee) and Goosestep (McLaren) worked over a round on the grass at three-quarter pace, finishing with a sprint up the straight. Both horses moved freely and pulled up well. Waikaia was indulged in easy half pace work on the sand. Take Take (Kirwan) and Caliburn (McLaren) jumped away from the four furlong post, Caliburn pulling hard, but was held back to his partner to finish half a length to the good in 54 sec. Caliburn looks well and gallops well when fresh. One of the most interesting pieces of w’ork of the morning was witnessed when Lady Ruth (Orange), Jazz Queen (Walsh), Mercutio (Kirwan) and Craftsman (Lee) went to the five and a-half furlong post, where the barrier had been erected. Lady Ruth took the outside. All four stood fairly well, Mercutio and Lady Ruth being a bit fidgety, but an excellent start was effected. Mercutio moved out best, followed by Jazz Queen and Craftsman. Lady Ruth propped for a few seconds, but was quickly encouraged to her work by Orange. It was a useful practice. Mercutio looks well. He was gelded during the

winter and has built up nicely since. Lady Ruth was up on her toes for some time at the barrier, but is showing a steady improvement in this respect. Her condition is a. credit to her trainer. Handicaps for the Westland Racing Club’s meeting are due on Monday. The acceptances on the following Monday. Passionate was omitted from the list of nominations for the Hokitika Handicap on the second day. Note is a doubtful starter for the Westland meeting. She has not been doing well of late, and it is thought that her trouble is rheumatism. Wharfdale and Big Push in the same stable are not as forward as usual, but should be improved by racing at the coming meetings. Rich Prize has been pleasing his connections, who have aspirations to the Westland Cup, but he will be meeting many others above his class. The Westland Racing Club’s track is in first-class order. The attentions of the caretaker during the winter months have had excellent results and the course and appointments look a picture. The reference in a contemporary to the questionable wisdom of trainers working their horses late in the day owing to the change in the weather from frigid to wariii, has evidently been inspired by someone out after something new in racing “copy. Taken to its logical conclusion, the paragraph would infer that all horses worked late in the day would suffer, the paragraph going on to state how a locally-trained horse bled after being worked about 10 a.m. Bleeding in a horse may be caused in many ways, but certainly not by a change in the weather, not even by a strenuous work out in the heat of the day. If such were likely, trainers would tremble for the fate of their horses on race days, particularly if they happened to race at the Melbourne, Sydney or Auckland summer meetings. It is hard to understand how such a paragraph became mixed up in the notes in a sporting column.
