NOTES ON THE TROTTING

i Special to "Star.”)

DUNEDIN, November 26

The Forbury Handicap gave Dalnahine another 1 opportunity to show what a greatly improved horse he is, for he Avon like a really good one. Be} 1 Harold, as usual, was first away and carried on the running for a mile, when the field closed up. Dalnahine made up his ground rapidly, but had none the best of the running, for at times he was racing on the outside three sulkies. He took the lead three furlongs from home, with Trenand in second place. Dalnahine held his own in the run down the straight and Avon in a manner which suggests he is a really good one. There was a lot more merit in his win than the actual performance suggests. He covered a lot of extra ground, and completely outpaced his stable mate, Terence Dillon, at the finish. As things were, although the bracketed pair finished first and second, the price was a short one. Had Terence Dillon not been in the race, Dalnahine would possibly have paid a long price. It was a striking performance on the part of a horse

that had been despaired of by several Canterbury trainers. Sold at a small figure, he has now won three important races. Terence Dillon went a solid race, and is evidently just as good as his admirers think he is. Trenand went much better than he had done on the first day, and disputed the lead until the last bit. Author Jmks was driven a patient race and filled fourth place. The Author Dillon gelding looks very light and would probably be benefited by a good spell. Talent was always, in a handy position, but showed no dash in the final stages. Bonny Logan went well until the speed was put on. There is no reason to suppose she will not win two-mile races. Away and Fight. Ever lost ground early and never looked like catching the leaders.

Paganelli, who received injurfi s while being unloaded from the train : t Auckland, and Archeen were the on y withdrawals from the Cheltcnha n Handicap. Aussie was made favou - ite and carried .£B7O more than Nam y Lee, with High Finance next In demand. High Finance was the leader from Nancy Lee, Major Abbe y and Waltzer. Across the top the order was much the same, with Auss'.e running along in fourth position. High Finance led into the straight from Nancy Lee, Aussie, Dave and Majoi Abbey. In a. good finish Nancy Lt e beat High Finance by a neck, with Aussie three-quarers of a length away third. Royal Mint and Wedding March were scratched for the Allison Cup, leaving a field ol eleven. Valkon was favourite and carried about £6O more

than Llandudno, with Transformer the next in request. Llandudno was first out from King Lu, Valkon, Eden Hall and Master Doon, and he led through the straight, with the order of the others unchanged. Along the back Llandudno was leading Transformer, Valkon. Eden Hall, Desert Glow, Golden Krist and Papatu, with Mint Leaf last. Llandudno was still in charge across the top and came into the straight ahead of Valkon, Eden Hall, Transformer and Phaola. The last named then put in a fast run and got up in time to win by half a length from Papatu, who beat Eden Hall by three-quarters of a length. The juveniles Coruscate and Lucy Rose were withdrawn from the Cambria Handicap, and the public made Potoadawn a £7O better favourite than Prodice, .with Volimond next in demand. The Begum lost her rider at the start, and Nankin Blue and Red Lion were the first to show out from Mauriaena, Catonian, Section and,Katarena. Red Lion was in charge across the top from Mauriaena, Catonian, Katarena and Potoadawn. Red Lion was first to turn into the straight, with Mauriaena and Katarena handy. In the run to the post Katarena finished best and went on to win by half a length from Catonian, who beat Potoadawn by a length. Mauriaena was fourth, followed by Prodice, White Wings, Red Lion, Volimond, Nankin Blue and Machau.

Abbey Day, Saucy Lass and La Roma were defections from the Takapuna Plate. Town Bird was made favourite, and carried about £425 more than Antrim Boy, with Ti Tree and King Peg the next best supported. Town Bird was quickest to begin, followed by King Arch, Modest Boy and Royal Doulton. Along the back Town Bird still had charge from King Arch, Modest Boy, Value, Subdivision, Abbess, Whaka King and Antrim Boy. There was little alteration across the top, and as the field came into the straight Town Bird was leading Abbess, Antrim Boy. King Arch, Macroon, Royal Doulton and Subdivision. Halfway down the straight Macroon, who paid nearly half a century, was in charge, when Ti Tree put in a fast run on the outside and got up in time to dead heat with her. Royal Doulton was a length back third, followed by Subdivision, Antrim Boy, Town Bird, Miss Potoa, Lady Robinson and Storm Fiend. Roy Reed, who was to have ridden Town Bird in the above race, sustained an injury to his eye whilst riding Prodice in the Cambria Handicap, and Golsboro took the mount on Town Bird.

An unusual position arose as to the result of Macroon and Ti Tree dead heating for first place in the Takapuna Plate. The Stewards of the Club consulted both the representative of Mrs. P. Carter (who, on account of illness, could not be present to see her horse run to-day) and Mr. C. P. Maclndoc, owner of Ti Tree. As it was not possible to present the one gold cup of SO sovs. to each winning owner, they both decided to accept a cup valued at 40 sovs. The tw.o cups will be presented on Monday. “If the lady owner is well enough on Monday she will be able to come over from Australia, so large was the dividend paid by her horse,” said Mr. Trevor Stranger over the radio this afternoon.'

Dec. 26, 27. —Westport T.C. GALLOPING. In addition to Standard, it is understood that W. H. Doyle, the Awapuni trainer, intends to bring Birkie, March On, and Bisora to the West Coast meetings. Only one of this trio has raced so far this season, Bisora, who did not begin too well, this being his first appearance. He is a three-year-old gelding by Bisogne from Princess Ora, so a brother to Benzora.

j\rrow Lad was very unlucky at Ashhurst. This three-year-old sprinter will win his share of stakes this season and the race on Wednesday will improve him for his Feilding engagements.

Kilburn made his first appearance in public at the Ashhurst meeting on Wednesday after a lengthy absence from the racecourse. He looked in great order, and quite a number of people expected him to race well. He did, and failed only in the last little bit after giving a really good display. Three fences from home he made a brillia .r. jump, going right away from his opponents. He is not engaged in the hurdle races either at Feilding or Woodville, so that probably the Christmas and New Year meetings wiil see his next appearance in that department. Thorndale has done everything required of him since his victory at Geraldine in September, and the Antagonist gelding promises to strip a very fit horse at his next start. He galloped nicely at headquarters yesterday and will probably make his next appearance in the Otaio Handicap at Tlmaru next month The Gay Lad gliding Assurance, has been doing nicely' the Cup meeting, and in n gallop with the imported Hoylake tit headquarters yesterday be acquitted himself in good style. Assurance will take his place in the Teschernaker Handicap at Timaru next month, and with such a light impost as 7.5, he may make his presence felt, in the mile and a quarter race. Rowley is racing very consistently' now and he will be hard to beat while he retains this form. Another Melbourne Cup story is to hand from Australia: She was ringing up a friend about a dance party, when

she found herself listening to the conversation of two men who apparently knew quite a lot about horses. “I would advise you,” one of them was saying, “to back Trivalve, Silvius or __l Though she was listening eagerlv, the girl could not catch the name of the .last-mentioned horse. Simulating, as 'hear as she qould, a man’s voice, she said: “What was the name of the last one?” There was a pause. Then came the answer, decisively: “Stickybeak!” Looking back, says a Northern writer, at the sprint event at the Ashhurst meeting, Arrow Lad was the best of good things beaten. It was doubtful if he could have met with more trouble on the journey, and twice in the straight he made an effort and then had to be checked to change his course. Quite close to the winning post his rider had to give up the attempt to come up on the outside of the leader, Mireusonta, and try to squeeze through on the rails. Eventually he succeeded, but. by that time Bo'nogne on the outside had got up and won. Bonogne put up a good performance, but there is no doubt that Arrow Lad should have beaten him. An exchange states that Earl Sande the famous American jockey, has been indefinitely suspended for crowding and fouling an opponent. Front Rank did not show anything like her best form when she raced at the New Zealand Cup meeting. She is now striding along freely in her work. Critics in the north are of the opinion that Valkon is going to win big money this season. Had her owner chosen Celerity II might'have been disposed of recently at a long price for Australia. It will be interesting to see how Battlement races if stripped at Timaru races.

The Greymouth Jockey Club’s course at Omoto looks improved by the recent rams. Several trainers have their charges in good shape, and some useful work is being accomplished.

The increased number of horses in work at the Omoto Course augurs well for the success of the Greymouth Jockey Club. Twenty-four horses are stabled in and around Omoto, of whom the majority are in work. On Saturday jM. Conza left for Hawera to purchase a horse on behalf of a local owner.

R. Orange has Erin-Go-Bragh and Lady Ruth looking well. Both were worked on the sand yesteyday, Erin-Go-Bragh being confined to easy trotting and cantering exercise. Flying Master went a couple of rounds on the sand, and nearly pulled his jockey out of the saddle most of the journey.

Corn Rigs, with Dombroski up, worked on the grass. He looks in good shape. Ellah was given useful work on the grass. Gaslight with Walsh up, strode out freely and pulled up fresh. King Cheops was cantered over half a mile, and then went two rounds on the sand. Steel Bar, with Lee in the saddle, worked over a round, sprinting up the straight. He afterwards trotted a couple of rounds on the sand.
