FIRE BRIGADES

ANNUAL DEMONSTRATION.

The West Coast Fire Brigades annual demonstration was held at Denniston on Saturday, when the weather conditions were favourable. Teams from Greymouth, Hokitika, Kumara, Reefton Westport, Cobden, Otira and Denniston competed. Otira won the Russell Shield, and Benyon Cup. Westport won the Browning Cup, the Rose Cup, and three gold medals. During the day, Fireman Blocksage, of the Greymouth Brigade injured his leg and had to withdraw from the contest, and as a result of being struck by the .reel, Secretary Walton (Greymouth) was knocked over and sustained concussion. He is confined to his home as a result. The various brigades gave good displays in the competitions in which they took part. Results were as follow: — One man event (Browning Memorial Cup):—Westport 1; Hokitika 2; Greymouth 3.

Two men coupling (Rose Cup):— Westport 1; Greymouth 2; Denniston

Three men, Wet, flat:—Otira 1; Kumara 2; Greymouth 3. Five men coil, wet:—Otira 1; Kumara 2; Reefton 3. Five men, reel: — Hokitika 1; Reefton 2; Kumara 3. Yesterday the visiting teams attended church parade to the various churches in Westport, and were later taken on a motor trip to points of interest around Westport. They left Westport on their return trip yesterday afternoon.
