LAWS OF THE JEWS
COUNSEL AND BIBLE.
Laws laid down in the Bible were quoted in the Wanganui Supreme Court last week in the course of the hearing of a case of alleged sheep stealing. Counsel who introduced the matter, however, did not conclude his Scripture reading, Mr Justice Ostler having something to say on the matter.
Mr Louis Cohen, counsel for accused, was in the midst of an. eloquent address to the jury. In opening his remarks on a fresh theme he stated, “Let me quote from the book of my ancestors.” Proceeding, he commenced to read Deuteronomy, chapter 19, verse 14, which opens: “Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour’s land mark which they of old time have' set in thine inheritance.”
His Honor, interrupting: We are not administering the laws of the Jews in this Court; we are administering British laws. To read such passages is to read something irrelevant and misleading.
Mr Cohen submitted that however misleading the law of the Bible was, it was the foundation of the law of the land.
