KUMARA NOTES

— , ■' - (Our Own Correspondent.) KUMARA, November 25. An accident which might easily have been attended with serious' results, happened to Mr Duncan McLean last Sunday evening. Mr McLean had been attending the Jubilee servicq at the Presbyterian- Church, and on returning to his home, proceeded to the kitchen, which was in darknesl, for a drink, and taking held of a jug supposed te contain milk, poured out some of the contents which he attempted to drink. However, he had no sooner got a mouthful when he discovered his mistake, but not before his mouth and throat were severely burned. The jug instead of containing milk was half-full of caustic soda, which had apparently been left on the dresser by mistake. Miss O’Callaghan, of Melbourne, who has been on a visit to her aunt, Mrs Mulvihill, left on her return home last Tuesday. Miss Eva Murphy, formerly of Kumara, but now a resident of Westport, will accompany her. Miss Murphy expects to be absent for about six months. In a letter received by a resident of Kumara by the last English mail, Mrs Stewart writes that both herself and her mother, Mrs Passmore, have very much improved in health, as a result of their long sea voyage. They expect to return to New Zealand in the near future. . . Miss Williams, whose condition necessitated her removal to the Hospital lart week, is reported to be improving slowly. ‘ . The funeral of the late Eric Barrow took place on Saturday, and was largely attended. The Rev. Mr Cox performed the rites at the church and graveside.
