LATE MESSAGES
NEW PLYMOUTH, November 26. At the Supreme Court, Albert Morgan Conroy was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on six charges of indecent assault on males, and to six months’ on a charge of attempted suicide, the sentences to be concurrent. Walter William Wickery, for driving negligently so as to cause the death of Otto Amlehm, was admitted to probation for two years and prohibited from holding a license for live years. LONDON, November 25. The Canterbury by-election, owing to Mr McNeill’s elevation to the peerage, resulted: Sir W. Wayland (Conservative) 13,657, Colonel D. Carnegie (Liberal) 10,175. CANBERRA, November 26. Federal circles anticipate that a serious dispute will develop between Australia and Canada over the future of the Pacific Cable Board. It is learned that the hesitation before the duplication of the cable was decided on, was due not to any feeling on the part of Canada that beam wireless is likely to adversely affect the revenue from cable, but because the Canadian Government required guarantees about the disposal of the large profits from the cable system, at the time of the duplication. It is pointed out that it is believed the revenue from the cables would be maintained, and Canada had demanded an undertaking that, the profits to be earned after duplication of the service would not be transferred to maintenance of account, but would be devoted to repaying to the interested parties the amount they had advanced towards the creation of the system. It is claimed that Canada disregarded the communications from Australia and New Zealand.
NELSON, November 26.
The hearing of the evidence in the charges against V. J. Crequer was concluded, accused pleading not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
