SHOOTING ON BEACH.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —I would be ‘pleased if you would publish a few linps in connection with Cr Kitchingham’s remark at the recent Borough Council meeting. It is very regrettable to have to sit down and read such twaddle, but we must agree some silly things are done and said (not to say amusing) at some of these meetings. I am only a layman, but at the same time think the Grey Borough Council approaches dangerous ground themselves at times. 1 think it would be easily seen that the coastline of New Zealand is controlled by the Admiralty, and fail even how such an august body like the Grey Borough Council could prevent military target practice, more so on the coastline. Perhaps Tainui Street would suit better, or 1 should say Mackay Street, with the targets posted near the Town Hall. Imagine target practice with blank cartridges! Imagine a squad of (I suppose we shall say soldiers) shooting at a target with blanks! Splendid! Then, fancy a man living in Greymouth (I should say all his life). But I don’t know, for a number of years, and he just wakens up and finds out firing practice is going on by the Military Department on the beach. Perhaps he thought in recent years it was a shooting gallery, or maybe, someone kicking benzine tins. It is a pity the Council could not take legal proceedings against the Department for using firearms. 1 should say this would be a step to prevent warfare (if other nations thought so). Written permits would be just the ticket, and it is well to be able to quote the by-laws. It is a pity there were no by-laws to prevent the recent World War in that particular part of the elobe. —I am. etc., S BALL CARTRIDGE. Hokitika, November - 25.
