DARKEST LONDON
CANDLES IN COMMONS
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.)
LONDON, November 25.
The West End was the victim, of the worst electric light breakdown London has yet experienced, due to a fire in the generating station.
The Palace of Westminster was plunged into darkness, including Big Ben. The Commoners struck matches to enable the debate to continue, the flickers adding to the eeriness of the scene in the darkened--' chamber. Others shouted for candles. Three were found and placed beside the Mace until Sir H. Brittain arrived with a bagful of candles, which were handed out. The Speaker finally adjourned the House. Government offices, clubs, stores and numberless restaurants, offices and flats were affected, but the street lamps remained alight, owing to the duplication of the current. Severe operations were going on in a. number of hospitals. The dressers swiftly lighted the emergency acetylent lamps, and the surgeons completed the operations.
