The annual meeting of the shareof the Golden Coast Co-op-erative Dairy Co., took place at the Oddfellows’ Hall at Reefton yesterday. Mr. Mathieson, Overseer Public Works Dept, leaves for the Maruia district to-day to make arrangements and lay off some work for the unemployed. Mr. W. F. Brett, County Engineer, will also go to Maruia on Monday in connection with the same matter. It is hoped that matters will be sufficiently advanced to place 25 men during next week. The work to be laid off will be at the Springs Junction side of the river with the idea of linking up the road from Springs Junction with the road to Murchison.
A meeting was held at the Miners’ Union office, on Friday, when the offer by the Government was discussed and the general opinion is that as the work on which the men are to be engaged is a necessary one of benefit to the County and not relief work, the workers consider the offer was a move by the Government to reduce wages. It was proposed and carried that the ruling rate of wages must be paid otherwise the members of the Inangahua Miners’ Industrial Union of Workers would not accept employment at the rates offered.
Constable Conway of Waiuta, left on holiday to-day and is being relieved by Constable W. Houston of Reefton.
