ALEXANDER MINES. The August report for the Alexander Mines states: — No. 1 Stopes—All the development ore being crushed, a start was made in the last two days of the month to break stone from these stopes. The lode maintaining its usual size and quality. No. 4 Level Crosscut.—This crosscut has been driven on contract for an extension of 138 feet making the total distance driven 148 feet from mouth During the last 20 feet progress has been slow owing to the amount of water making from the face, roof and sides of the crosscut, only six hour shifts being worked at present. The country in the face is solid and has straightened up considerably to that encountered in No. 3 level crosscut. Mullocky Creek South (Downey’s Reef). —Driving has been continued for a footage of 36ft, making a total of 119 feet from surface. This drive is still on a fault line carrying a fair amount of stone, but no solid stone has been met with in the distance driven. The country on both sides of the fault line is hard making progress slow. Battery.—Fifty seven tons of development ore were crushed at the battery for a yield of 82 ozs 17 dwts melted gold and 40 tons of sands were cyanided for 27ozs lldwts of bullion. Total estimated value £415.

STOCKS AND SHARES. (Notes by “Insider.”) The market has been quieter and prices conseqquently have been a shade easier. Bank of New Zealand had sales at 58/-, but sellers are now asking 58/6. Union Banks continue to attract buyers at £l5, Wales ex-dividend have cased to buyers at £43/5/-, National of New Zealand have impi’oved slightly with buyers at £6/16/- and sellers at £6/17/-. Very little change has taken place in Insurance shares. New Zealand’s are selling at 40/-, South British 58/-, New Zealand Brewery shares have buyers at 43/7, showing slight improvement over last week, British Tobaccos continue to attract buyers at 53/-, Colonial Sugars are wanted at £53. Very little business is done in mining shares. Waihi has improved to 20/6.
