ARCHDEACON DEVOY. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 11 The Venerable Archdeacon Devoy died last night at the age of 84 years. He was one of the most outstanding personalities of the Roman Catholic Church in New Zealand. The.. Archdeacon passed away peacefully in his sleep* Born in Queen County, Ireland, he was educated at St. Mary’s College. Dundalk. He completed his ecclesiastical studies at Belley, in France. He came to New Zealand in 1879, and was stationed first as chaplain. Then he went to Kumara, on the West Coast, and next to Timaru, and thence to Wellington. In Wellington, Archdeacon Devoy was first connected with St. Patrick’s College. Subsequently he was Parish priest at Te Aro. Then, in 1892, he was appointed Vicar-General oi Wellington Archdeaconese. His ohter offices included that of Provincial of the Marist Fathers for New Zealand, parish priest at St. Anne’s Parish, and parish priest of Island Bay Parish.

MAORI CHIEF. CHRISTCHURCH, June 12. On Saturday the death occurred of Hone Tikao, aged 77 years, Chief of the Rapaki and Port Levy Maoris. He was a nephew of John Tikao, one of the chieftains who signed the Ngaitahu land transfer, by which nearly the whole W Canterbury was ceded to the British. Hone Tikao had the largest claim under the Ngaitahi land claims, which are now being considered. SISTER MARY JOSEPH. The death of Sister Mary Joseph took place at the Convent of Mercy, Hokitika yesterday evening about five o’clock. She was the first resident of Hokitika to be received by the Sisters after their advent to the West Coast. The late Sister, who was sixty-three years of age, had spent forty-seven years of her life within the Convent and was highly esteemed by the large circle of young people who came under the influence of her instructions. She had a protracted illness, and her death was not unexpected. She was the second daughter of the late Mr Joseph Mandi, and is survived by one brother Dr • Mandi (Hokitika) and three sisters, Mesdames T. Coltman (Wellington), and Rickitt (Hokitika) and Miss Rachel Mandi, who is absent from New Zealand on a tour abroad. The late Sister had served in Greymouth, Hokitika, Ross, Kumara, and Rimu Convents. Her funeral will take place at Hokitika, and will be attended by Dr Kennedy (Christchurch), and the West Coast clergy.
