ARAPUNI WORKS
GENERAL STRIKE DECLARED. TE AWAMUTU, June 13. All workmen engaged at the Arapiini electrical works declared a general strike at midnight on Sunday. The dispute arose out of payment for overtime. It is stated that the employers should pay double rates for all overtime in excess of four hours, and the neglect to do so gives rise to Ihe present dispute. A mass meeting of the men held yesterday reached the decision to declare a general strike from midnight (his morning. J. Kelly (president) and E. Lake (secretary of the union) went, io hold a conference with Armstrong Whitworth’s representatives, but a conference was refused by the company, who stipulated that the men ‘ inst return to work before any consideration is possible. Mr Hahdman, the company’s manager at Arapuni, is at present in. Auckland. Meanwhile, work is at a standstill.
