LATE MESSAGES
LONDON, June 10. The British Empire Service League carried a resolution recommending the Empire headquarters to send a questionnaire to branches all over the Empire, inviting suggestions for using the organisation to further inter-im-perial trade. Supporters emphasised that the proposal was in no way political. The League selected Australia as the venue for the next biennial conference. SYDNEY, June 11. Mr Bavin set the ball rolling in connection with the forthcoming State elections, by opening the Nationalist campaign at Bathurst. He described
the Lang Government as the worst that had ever existed in this State, and charged Mr Lang with various acts of gross political dishonesty. LONDON, June 11. The Empire Service League discussed the proposal to recommend branches to press for legislation in the event of war, providing for conscription of property, persons, lives and liberty of ail citizens. A Ceylon delegate said Britishers would not look at anything labelled conscription. He advocated that the income and person of every citizen be taken for the service of the State at military rates of pay. If a man did not want work at home on privates’ pay, he <could go to the front, where Tommy Atkins would deal effectively with him. Fraser East said that Australia twice rejected conscription at referendums, but he supported the idea of whole nations’ resources being at the Government’s disposal in time of way, each community deciding the best method of doing it. LONDON, June 10. The provisional programme for the reception of the Duke and Duchess of York at Portsmouth includes a big ceremonial naval welcome, ’when the Renown arrives. The Prince of Wales is expected to meet the Yorks aboard, and they will receive a welcome-home address from the city of Portsmouth before proceeding to London by special train.
