ALLEGED GAMING

HAIRDRESSER CONVICTED

GISBORNE. May 16

Arthur Owen and Cornelius Patterson were before the Magistrate this morning, on alleged breaches of the Gaming Act. The former was charged with keeping open and using his hairdresser’s premises as a common gaming house, and the latter with assisting Owen in the conduct of the business.

In addition, six charges of frequenting the street for the purposes of betting were preferred against Owen. Ac cased pleaded not guilty. Inspector Eccles stated that the prosecution was the result of a raid on May 7. Betting materials were found in the shop, and bets would be shown to have taken place.

After a short adjournment, Mr. Wauchope, for the defence, said that he had a conference with the Inspector and his client, and an arrangement had been made, and he would now plead guilty on behalf of Owen. When the charge against Patterson was called, a plea of guilty was entered also.

Inspector Eccles asked leave to withdraw the charges of frequenting the street for the purposes of betting. The Magistrate lined Owen the maximum, '£loo with costs. Patterson was fined £2O with costs.
