REEFTON NOTES
'Our Own Correspondent.)
REEFTON. May 14.
Local disciples of Isaac Walton are lamenting the mortality amongst the spawning salmon recently caused in the Inangahua River by releasingsome tanks of sand on a low river This smothers the fish now makingupstream to spawn. The difficulty could be overcome by letting the sand go on a slight flood as the extra water would so dilute the sand as to render its effects less harmful to the fish. Mr P. S. Duffy left for Christchurch on Thursday on holiday.
Miss Ivy Kearns of Stratford, Taranaki, is at home on holiday. Mr W. Newman, manager of the Hokitika branch of the White Star Motor Service was in Reefton on Thursday. Mr Aubrey Panckhurst returned to Wellington by Thursday’s overland train.
A miner named Chas. Cooper employed at the New Big River Mine, had the misfortune to have a forefinger broken by a fall of stone on Tuesday last. He was brought to Reef ton and was attended to by Dr Church, and will be off work for some time.Mesdames Newton and McCormack tied for the ladies’ prize at the Reefton Fire Brigade’s euchre on Thursday evening, the former winning in the play off. Messrs H. Hampson and F. Kearns were first and second respectively for the gents’ prizes. The annual ball of the Pirate Football Club was held in the Theatre Roval last evening. The music was provided by Miss Knyvett (piano), Messrs Jackson (Strom Fiddle), Spencer (Banjo), Sharpe (Swanee Whistle), and did much to enhance the evening’s enjoyment. Supper was provided, the arrangements for this being capably carried out by a ladies committee. A goodly number of couples were present, and voted the evening very enjoyable.
