CH.CH. STUDENTS ARRESTED

CHRISTCHURCH, April 14.

There was a lively scene at the Christchurch railway station, last evening, when after some hakas and cheering by students from Canterbury College, two of their number were taken to the police station. The students, who numbered over a hundred, were at the station to welcome the Otago University team which was on its way to Auckland to participate in the inter-university tournament. Prior to the arrival oi the Otago team, the Canterbury College teafn had been given a rousing send off, as the boat, train carrying Canterbury team departed. The large crowd on the platform were jostled and shoved about. In the conlusion, a student bumped one of the railway officials, who highly incensed called cn a police constable to arrest the student. Subsequently, two were taken away in a taxi by the constable. In the opinion of the railway people the thing went beyond skylarking, and strong measures were necessaiy for the protection of the travelling public. “It’s a postive disgrace,” said the stationmaster, Air IT. S. Lowry, when asked if he would like to comment on the situation. “They are nothing but a lot of educated larrikins. It means that I shall have to close the. platform on such occasions if it does not stop.” LATER— The police state that the two coliege students will be charged later on summons. They did not spend the night in the cells.
