(Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, Nov. 29. The Reefton Miners’ Union propose to hold a picnic for the children of members on the Strand Reserve on Boxing Day next and a committee of members is beipg formed with that object in view and for the purpose of giving children an enjoyable day’s outing. Mr. Frank Hay of the local Post Office staff has received notice of his transfer to Blackball and leaves for his new sphere of duty on Wednesday morning. River erosion at Rosstown is carrying away the road in spite of the river being down to normal and about two chains of the road has gone so far. Unless speedily attended to, some residents will be cut off except by a long detour to get to their homes. The Salvation Army local branch .held a most successful Beggars’ Pantry on Saturday last, and in spite of counter attractions and bad weather, all goods on sale were disposed of. The boys’ solo competition on Saturday evening in connection with the picture show at the Princess Theatre created a large amount of interest among the bandsmen and the youthful associates of the competitors. Mr. E. Elliston, conductor of the band was stage manager and the following are the results with the titles of the pieces played: W. Mitchell, E. Flat tenor, “Zenobia,” 69 points; C. Flat, tenor, “O Sole Mio,” 56; H. Kearns, B Flat, cornet, “O Sole Mip,” 53; G. Crossman B Flat baritone, 49; E. Pennington, E Flat, tenor’ “Home, Sweet 'Home,” 48; B. Pennington, E Flat, tenor, “Sultan’s Grand March,” 48. Mr. S. Austin was judge and had a somewhat difficult task owing to the variation in the age of the lads, but his decisions gave every satisfaction. The audience were greatly apreciative of the boys’ efforts, each one being heartily applauded at the conclusion of his piece. Mr. Elliston thanked Mr. Cereseto foi‘ the, opportunity for tlie contests during the evening’s picture display. The annual meeting of the Reefton Cycling Club was held on Friday evening, the annual report and balance sheet 'showing a credit balance were read and adopted. The report stated that 'the club held 16 road races throughout the season. Competition was keener than last season, owing to numerous medals being donated by several local citizens. During the season Dan Wright lowered the record from Reeftoh to Capleston to lhr smin 25sec, beating W. Fox’s time of llir Gmin'. that had stood for l years. Gold medals donated by T. Flannigan, R. Wills, H. L. Morgan, H. Hudson and Adams Ltd. (Christchurch), were won by F. Lawry, W. Lawson, G. Reid,- H. Hudson and R. Hultquist. Messrs Noble and Nicholson (times), and Lawn (starter), were thanked for assistance in advertising etc. The ejection,, of officers resulted:. Patron, Mr R. Meriibers’ subscriptions were fixed at 2/6 junior members and 5/- over 16. The opening, race of the season will be hdTd' to Brazil’s and return on December 15.
