ELLESMERE NOTES

THE SEASON’S PROSPECTS (Our Owii UorreSpondefiL) IRWELt, NdV; 21 Farming is at present in a very busy way, dairying is in full swing, with a wonderful growth of grassy [neetffiO; CloVfef aHd dtfiei* greed ffieffi Judging by the huinbef bf credm cabs ?n the motor trucks which travel Erom oiie dairy farm to another to pick up at the farm gates and dairies, mere is every fbasrin 1.0 tlliiik tliferd is a goou butter fat harvest. But it id understood there will only be a small cheque compared with last year’s. Butter factories are paying lid to 12d per lb., collected cream. Many farmers are of the opinion, that butter Will Be ih Hid Vlffiility of 8d and 9d per lb ih 1927 chiefly due to other countries getting! their dairies ehhas beffii alittost completed in the Ellesmere district, but oil the runs shearing will not commence for some time yet. Springs County has still a large number of flocks to bn toll. Crops are looking in very good condition. Oats have been out in ear for some Weeks; Wheat is out in ear but only in a few paddocks so far; Barley has b'ebh ill Biir iii sbhie pllrtS 0t 1118 district for a few weeks, and in the heavy lands in Ellesmere County some splendid oat crops have gone to hay with the long straw and being headed. The rain and wind put several acres down in one paddock in the Lakeside district, but it has a chance of erecting again. Mangels are up and several fields have been cleaned and thinned. Chibs have been a great nuisance to the root growers. There are hundreds of acres of potatoes in and some early paddocks are up and moulded. Two fields 1 noticed Wets iii fldWef; these were cut With the late fronts blit tb hilve regained their normal grbwlii. Seybrfll liifrgd fields of garden peas are looking exceptionally well. Some hay has been cut while there will be a big hay harvest with plenty of labour offering locally. Tractors and teams are busy getting rape and turnip land cultivated. Some early sown rape is well above the land and with the heavy showers about every three days ibr tile bast moiitli, lids helped greatly tb thb growth. Trattoi'S in the Burnham and Dunsandel districts are going at full speed from 3.30 in the morning till 8.30 in the evening. Two drivers take shifts at these tractors. In the Burnham district a young lady does a daily share in the manoeuvres of the tractor while hei father has a sleep during the afternoon and evening. This young lady has beeh at this for about Six Weeks and likes tb be seated Oh tile Fbrdson which has I’uii for five years without much trouble. To pen the thoughts of the motoring public generally cohcerniiig the new bridge to be erected Over the Selwyn river between Norwood flfid Selwyn stations, Would be rather a hard matter. A few piles have been driven for months and we might have this bridge erected in two years. If the bridge was built on contract, it would likely have been up now and ready for traffic. We live in hopes of a faster building scheme than the present pace. All the Shows were a great success and the high quality of stock were something above the ordinary. Recently the West Coast boys were in camp at Burnham, Canterbury. Some of the boys visited a few dances where they seemed to have enjoyed themselves. They were a very happy lot, full of fun and sport and possessed great manners and friendliness. They were all good cobbers, such as needed to make camp life happy. I had a chat with a few whom I remembered again having met them on the Coast some time ago when I visited Greymouth and other places. Most of the Territorials liked the West Coast life and did not care about Burnham for sport. If they cared to travel about ten miles they would have had sport of .any description and any night as the Ellesmere County halls were in full swing each night with dancing, cards, coniaerts and pictures.
