ST. PATRICK’S CHURCH
NEW ALTAR RAILS. The blessing of the new altar rails presented by Mrs F. M. Dennehy to St. Patrick’s Church, will be performed at this evening's service by Bishop Brodie. The work of construcijbn has been carried out by Mr J. Tait, monumental Sculptor, of Christchurch, who specially designed the rails to, fit the special requirements of the church. The rails are of Carrara xnarble in bases, arches and mouldings. The columns are of Calcula marble from Australia. The work is very delicate and frail, though strong. The design is true Gothic, the mouldings are true to style -and are , highly polished. This is the first work of this class to be undertaken in New Zealand. The gates are of ornamental brass and built by Toomey and Co., Christchurqh. They tire specialy, hung to- swing right back clear of the marble pillars and leave the opening entirely free to its full'width. Carvings. on .the rails are executed in statuary marble, advantage being taken of the Gothic design to vary the design of each cap and incorporate cherubs on. some and on others wheat and the vine, symbolising .the bread and the ‘ .
