Smith, who have been touring Great Britain and the Continent, were to leave .England today for Canada, on return to NGw Zea' land. Mr Malone, - the Health Department’s representative, who recently underwent ah operation at the Grey Hospital, l is ilnproving slowly, al-' though not yet'out of danger. KMessrs J. Bertinshaw, Chief Railway Engineer, and J. McNair, District Engineer, who have been on ihvisit of inspection to the Westland Section,, left this morning for Christchurch. . ; ;A cablegram from .Vancouver stated that the Conservative .Opposition in British' Columbia,- has selected Mr S. F. Tojmie, a-; rifember of the Federal Parliament, as leader. Mr W. J.' The funeral of the late Mr.Sidnpy Cook pf Preston Road, took place yesterday. afternoon, when there was a godd attendance. . The in the’-house and at ';the graveside at Karoro were conducted by Archdeacon Carr. •Recent arrivals at the Albion Hotel include: Mr and Mrs Stephenson (Wellington), Mrs Wafforn, Mr W. H. Hindle, A. Olliver, E. Pearcy, J. Bucker (Christchurch), L. A. Easter,brook Nelson, Brooks, Christchurch, Carmichael (Nelson), P! G. Ellis (Timaru), ,G; C. Greening, J. AV. Briasco, W. Chaturn (Christchurch). The death took place at the Grey Hospital last evening of Mi John Birch, of Dunollie, ■ who received in-*' juries, which proved to be fatal in an accident at the Rewanui Mine on November 17. Deceased was 69 years of age, and unmarried. The funeral vvill leafe the residence of Mr R. Rhmage, Bright Street, Cobden, at 2.30 p.m. to-morrow, for Karoro Cemetery. An inquest will be opened at Greymouth oh Monday.
