GREY COUNTY COUNCIL

ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Grey County Council was continued yesterday afternoon; present, Crs D. Baybutt (Chairman), J. P. Irvine, H G. Carter, W. Ogilvie, J. Ryall, A. Robinson, A. Donnellan and G. Blair. The Counties’ Association wrote regarding the Dominion Federated Drivers’ Union dispute, suggesting that if the Council had been cited and desired exemption, it would be necessary to apply giving full and sufficient reasons. The letter was received, Cr Ryall remarking that the County Council was paying above the award, and was therefore not interested.

Payments for the following road work done, under grant, were received: Moana to Ruru £6B; GreenstoneBlackball deviation £62 10s; Inangahua Junction to Waiho main highway Big Grey to Teremakau, £372. The Organising Secretary of the Grey District Progress League wrote asking for assistance towards the publishing of a hand book, showing the scenic wonders of the district, of which the League was putting out 2000 copies, a copy to be supplied to every tourist office in the Dominion. Cr Robinson said the West Coast had received publicity enough. He moved the letter be received and no action taken. Seconded by Cr Irvine. Cr Baybutt moved as an amendment, that the Council donate £5. This was seconded by Cr Carter, who said the publication would serve to advertise the Coast and attract tourists. The amendment was carried.

D. A. M. McLean applied for leave to cart timber on the road from his mill near Kumara till Christmas. Referred to the Engineer. A. Rotheray wrote asking for the erection of a bridge at Inchbonnie to assist to give access to his property. The matter was referred to the Engineer for a report. . Lloyd Bros, wrote asking to be provided with access to their property at Teremakau, the former access having been washed away as a result of encroachment of the Teremakau River. The County Engineer stated that a road would require to be constructed over a swamp and would be a costly matter, seeing only one ratepayer was going to be benefitted thereby.
