CRICKET ASSOCIATION.

(Special to “Star.”) WESTPORT, October 22. The Buller Cricket Association’s annual report showed a fairly successful season last year, the United (Waimangaroa) Club winning the senior cup. A junior competition was inaugurated, and was also won by the United. An effort will be made to get the West Coast and Nelson representative teams to visit Buller tliis year. BOXING MATCH.

The Westport Boxing Association is endeavouring to arrange a bout at the Boxing Night tourney between Artie Hay and the winner of the ElmourCasey fight at Millerton next Saturday. Hay replied that he is willipg to meet Elinour. The Association is now waiting a reply whether the Napier man will meet Casey in tho event of the latter winning at Millerton. LIME FOR FARMERS. When the request from Mr. J. H. Martin for permission to quarry lime came before the County Council yesterday, the Councillors generally agreed that every assistance should be given to Mr. Martin. Hon. W. H. Mclntyre said that it would be a boon to the farming community to bo able to secure lime at a low price. To give Mr. Martin the chance to put the product on the market at a figure that would prove acceptable to the consumers, he thought that the Council should give the applicant the right to quarry limo for two years; free of royalty. Mr Hawes thought that a nominal charge could be made. He pointed out that the Council was paying a- small fee for the lease of the ground at Cape Foulwind. It was finally decided to charge Mr. Martin £1 per annum for the right to quarry limestone

MAGISTRATE’S COURT. Richard Phelan, charged with an aggravated assault on a ten-year-old boy, was yesterday afternoon sentenced by Mr Meldrum, S.M., to three months’ imprisonment. Phelan had previously been before the Court on a charge of theffi of articles at Auckland, and was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. He was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on this count also. The sentences were fixed concurrently. At the .Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon. Mr. W. Meldrum, S.M.. gave reserved judgment in the trespass case Moloney v. Goulding, and in the motor car camages crso Moloney v. Rogers and Goulding. In the former charge, judgment was given for £lNvith costs, and in the lat- ; ter case, the damages including cost, ; was entered for £32 15s 6d.

LEAGUE OVERTURES. Mr. Ron. McKenzie, the promising Star three-quarter, whose name has been included in the Rugby League team for the West Coast, stated to-day that he has no intention, either of making the trip or of forsaking the amateur ranks. Overtures have certainly been made to induce McKenzie and other young players to turn pro, but in the majority of cases the effort has failed. BEAUTY COMPETITION. The death occuried this morning of a very old resident, Mr. Sterne Young, aged 76 He was a native of England, but had been resident in the Dominion for 52 years. Practically the whole of the time was spent s on the West Coast. He was a locksmith by trade He leaves a daughter in Tasmania, two daughters and one son in the Grey district.
