Mr. E. Ashmead Bartlett (ex-M.P.) against whom a receiving order was issued at the instance of moneylenders, estimates his debts at £lO,OOO. He attributes his position to extravagance, heavy interest on borrowed money, and the cost of fighting elections. Captain Thomas Plumer, son of Field Marshal Plumer,. has been examined in bankruptcy. His liabilities are £1340. His only assets were a pair of cuff-links, valued at fifty shillings. The chief cause of his bankruptcy was a prosecution for being drunk while in charge of a motor car. The case itself was dismissed, but it cost him £ 1000.
