ROSE WINS AGAIN
NEW RECORD FOR MILE. (P*r Press Association.) MASTERTON, March 4. Seventeen yards separated Randolph Rose and Lloyd Hann m their fourth meeting, which took place here tonight, when Rose succeeded in conquering ins opponent for the third lime in lour matches, and, in so uomg, he established a new Australasian record of 4min 13 3-ssec lor the mile, which is less than four seconds slower than the world s record. Halm adopted different tactics from his previous contests, and hit the trout. He Jed nose by three yards over the quarter mile, which was covered in oilsec. The pace was kept up over the second quarter, half a mile being left behind in 2.4 3-5. The gap between the scratch men and the leaders was ■appreciablylessened in this lap, but the champions took a breather in the third lap, three-quarters of a mile being covered in 3.H4. At the bell, .Rose forged on doggedly, and when they entered the back stretch, there was only a yard between them. A furlong from home, the limit men were disposed of, and as they rounded the bend, Hahn put in his run. The pace, however, had been too solid, and a thirty yards’ effort saw the last of the American. Rose .challenged, lo which Hahn could not respond, and the New Zealander went on to win by 17 yards in 4.13 3-5, an Australasian record. The occasion was marked by unparalleled enthusiasm. Half of the crowd of 4000 swarmed on the track, and cheered both runners. The ground could not be cleared for a quarter of an hour. Scholz easily won the 100yds. in 10 seconds, and the 220yds in 21 4-5 seconds, which equals the New Zealand record. CHRISTCHURCH GRATIFICATION. (Special to “Star.”) CHRISTCHURCH, March 5. News of the result of the race was received with acclamation. A meeting of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, last night, decided to send a telegram of congratulation io Rose. The Centre made arrangements for an evening meeting to be held at' church after the New Zealand Championships are decided, and to invite the athletes competing at Dunedin to attend. It was stated that there was every possibility that Rose would compete at this meeting.
