———— 81-ANNUAL COMPETITIONS(Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, March 3. Under ideal conditions, the New -Zealand United Fire Brigades’ Association commenced its bi-annual competitions this morning on the Exhibition sports ground, seventy-one brigades competing. The events commenced were the Gilbert Memorial, two men coupling, three men hose, and hydrant and dressing, and ladder for one man. Some very fast times were recorded in the latter event, which was the only one completed at the end of the day. Superintendent Morrison (Hawera) Brigade) gave a brilliant display of smart dressing and ladder climbing, winning the event in the very smart time of 14 2-ssecs. When the day’s competitions concluded at 6 p/m., the eight leading teams in the two men coupling were Te Kuiti, Gore, Taihape, Hawera, Hillside Railway, Te Aroha and Hastings. The six leading teams in the Gilbert Memorial event are : —Whangarei, Hawera, Devonport, Dannevirke, Napier Railway and Te Aroha. A Whangarei man put up a remarkably fast time in this event. The leading seven teams in the hose and hydrant event are : —Hawera, Dannevirke, Thames, Greenlane, liape, Stratford and Te Aroha. As the competitions proceeded the standard time in each event was lowered, 'And many teams /abseqnently "'eve not tested. There are eleven teams still to compete in the nose and hydrant event, about thirty-six teams in the two men coupling event, and over forty men are yet to contest the Gilbert Memorial event. The unfinished events will be continued at 9 a-m. to morrow. When they are concluded, the three men disabled hose event will be started. The following was the result of the One Man Ladder Dressing event:— Hawera 14 3-ssecs 1 ; Hillside Railway 16secs 2; To Kuiti 17secs 3; Gore 17 l-ssecs 4 ; Onehunga 18 3-ssecs 5 ; Hastings 18 4-5 6.
