TRANSFERS FROMGREYMOUTH.
’■Recently a number of transfers were reported as about to take place, as a result, of the recommendations of the Railway Commission, and its proposals for centralisation of tlie railway repairs and construction branches. 1 It was recommended that all car and waggon ednstruction be carried, out at ’ Addington, and all foundry work at the Hillside shops, in Dunedlin. Following on the adoption in toto, of the Commission’s recommendations, it has been decided to transfer most of the Greymouth Railway Workshops’ staff to other centres, leaving only sufficient to carry out light funning repairs. The transfers decided upon will Include the following:—Nine fitters, apprentices, three turners, threw pointers, two carpenters, two strikers, two labourers, one boilermakei, one hqlder-up, and one lifter. ~ " , It is intended to effect the transfers with as little inconvenience to the staff as possible, and, iii this, .the difficulties of the housing problem have not been overlooked. It is proposed to’ Irans.fei;,. as far is practicable, the single mep first. Last week Mr E. T. L. Spidey, Production Engineer, visited Greymouth arid discussed ’ the position with the mbn T s representatives, when it was decided to call for volunteers to go to the different points where reinforcement is required. The .transfers will become effective from the en<t ol February. It is’ understood that the local car and waggon shop is -io be utilised temporarily as a motor shed. It is still expected that the running shed at Elmer Lane wift be erected. When this work is’Completed, it is understood a portirih of the present buildings will be removed to afford more yard space for shunting operations.
